This next day on the island I had hoped would go better, but would soon find this island would become quite the ordeal to overcome. We traveled through rather thick jungle, with the path the only real indication of where we were going. Rak seemed to be looking for anything he could use in his alchemical concoctions with the other two and myself staying mostly silent. We came across what I originally hoped to be a clearing, but found it instead to be swampy marshlands. The place had a feeling of foreboding, which quickly grew with the sound of buzzing as we moved further in.
Rak had the right idea when he heard the buzzing grow louder as he quickly handed the few bottles of alchemist fire he carried. We were shortly set upon by disgusting swarms of some kind of mosquitoes. We were barely able to fend off one wave, myself and Harvus taking quite a nasty blow from their bites. (EWWW EWWWW EWWW GET THEM OFF!)
We heard another group of them fast approaching and admittedly in a blind panic I dove into the swamp water in the hopes to escape. The route I took unfortunately didn’t go forward but went back the way we came. At the time however, I was not in the soundest of mind to care, I only desired to get away from the swarm. As I made it back I could hear no sign of the mosquitoes, but I also saw no sign of the group. I cursed myself for panicking the way I did and after a few minutes of waiting, psyched myself up to take another dip into the swamp to find the others.
I swam for what seemed like a while, poking my head up only to get my barrings and for air. However, as I got closer, I could smell smoke, and soon saw the blaze of a fire on the horizon. I grew concerned something went wrong and when I heard no sign of the buzzing, jumped back onto land and took off in a sprint. I arrived to find that the fire had been started by none other than my group to which I asked justifiably what the hell had happened, the only response I got was from Rak, who looked at me with a smile and shaking his hands in excitement said “ALCHEMY! SSSSSSS….” A few small explosions erupted from the fire and I figured I wouldn’t be getting a straight answer from anyone that day.
Harvus seemed to have taken a larger hit than I realized from the mosquitoes’ assault and so I parted with one of my two potions of cure light wounds, deciding it best if I drink the other. After a moment of rest we pressed onward, we didn’t have a lot of time before the boat would leave us so we needed to find what we could.
We ended up finding a beach just east of the path. We noticed a figure off in the distance near a giant palm tree and decided to investigate. There were many giant palm trees that dotted the beach, some with smashed coconuts underneath them. When we drew close enough to see the figure in detail, it was obvious they were undead, however they seemed content with smacking the base of one of the larger palm trees. Before we had a chance to do anything however, and much to our surprise, a giant crab dropped from the tops of the tree and flattened the undead in the blink of an eye.
We decided we were in no shape to fight such a foe and backed away quickly, however the coconuts in the other trees seemed like quite the haul we needed. Both Harvus and I climbed to the top of one of the trees. I threw down coconuts whilst Harvus chopped some of the leaves so that Rak could makeshift construct a basket to hold these giant coconuts in. False dusk began to set in as we made our way back to the road, and in the hopes to gleam more from the island, as well as be in a better position we hiked upward on the rocky slopes of the path and finally made camp for that night. Boy do I hope the worst is behind us here on the island.
